Presbyterian Blue Hose
The Presbyterian Blue Hose are the athletic teams of Presbyterian College, a private liberal arts college in Clinton, South Carolina. The Blue Hose compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as a member of the Big South Conference.
The Blue Hose nickname dates back to the early 1900s, when sportswriters referred to the Presbyterian College athletic teams as the "Blue Stockings" because of the blue socks they wore. The term "blue stocking" was originally used to describe a woman who was intellectually gifted but socially awkward. However, by the early 1900s, the term had come to be used more generally to describe anyone who was intelligent and well-educated.
