The Wahpeton Wops

The Wahpeton Wops were the nickname of the sports teams of Wahpeton High School in Wahpeton, North Dakota, until 1991. The name "Wops" is a derogatory term for Italian-Americans, and its use as a sports team nickname was considered offensive by many people.

The Wahpeton School Board voted to change the team's nickname to the Huskies in 1991. The change was made in an effort to be more respectful of the community's diversity and to create a more inclusive environment for all students and athletes.
