Top 5 College Football Players in 2023
College football is one of the most exciting and competitive sports in the world. Every year, new stars emerge and old ones fade away. As we look ahead to the 2023 season, here are the top five players to watch out for.
1. Caleb Williams, QB, USC Trojans
Williams is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and the early favorite to be the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The sophomore transferred from Oklahoma to USC after Lincoln Riley became the head coach of the Trojans. He led the nation in passing yards (707), passing touchdowns (seven), and big-time throws (10) on plays outside of the original design in 2022. He also has great mobility and can make plays with his legs. Williams is a dynamic playmaker who can elevate any offense.2. Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina Tar Heels
Maye is the biggest challenger to Williams for the QB1 spot both in college football and in the 2024 draft. The redshirt freshman was the most valuable player in 2022, according to PFF's wins above average metric. He also had the most big-time throws (45) among all FBS quarterbacks. Maye is a prototypical pocket passer with a strong arm, accuracy, and poise. He can also run when needed, as he had 56 combined rushing first downs and touchdowns in 2022.3. Blake Corum, RB, Michigan Wolverines
Corum was arguably the best running back in college football last season, making him an easy choice for No. 1 at his position. His 96.2 grade didn't just lead all players in the country, it was the best PFF has ever seen from a Power Five player. Corum's 96 combined rushing first downs and touchdowns were the second most in the country, behind only Minnesota's Mohamed Ibrahim, who received 72 more carries. The junior is a versatile and explosive runner who can also catch passes out of the backfield.4. Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia Bulldogs
Bowers was a key contributor to Georgia's national championship run in 2022. The true freshman led all tight ends in receiving yards (1,137), touchdowns (14) and yards after catch (601). He also ranked second among all FBS players in broken tackles (28). Bowers is a mismatch nightmare for defenses with his size, speed and athleticism. He can line up anywhere on the field and make plays.5. Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia Bulldogs
Ringo was another standout freshman for Georgia in 2022. The former five-star recruit led all cornerbacks in coverage grade (91.4) and interceptions (seven). He also allowed only one touchdown and a passer rating of 38.9 when targeted. Ringo is a lockdown defender with elite physical traits and ball skills. He can shut down any receiver he faces. These are just some of the players who will make college football exciting and fun to watch in 2023.
