Where did Pitt Panthers get their name?
The University of Pittsburgh's mascot, the Panther, was adopted in 1909. The name was suggested by alumnus George M.P. Baird, who cited the following reasons for his choice:
- Panthers were once indigenous to the Pittsburgh region.
- Panthers have ancient, heraldic standing as a noble animal.
- The name "Panther" has a nice alliteration with the school's colors, blue and gold.
- The color of a panther's fur is similar to the school's old gold color.
- No other college or university at the time used a panther as a mascot.
