Where did Liberty Flames get their name?
The Liberty Flames got their name in 1974, when the student body voted to be called the “Flames”, a name derived from the school's motto “Knowledge Aflame”. The school's motto was chosen by founder Jerry Falwell, who wanted to create a school that would be a beacon of light in the darkness of the world. The Flames mascot, Sparky, was introduced in 1980. Sparky is an eagle, which was chosen because of the patriotic symbolism connected with the school's name.
The Liberty Flames have a rich history and tradition. The team has won several conference championships and has made several appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Flames are known for their hard-nosed play and their never-say-die attitude. They are a proud team that represents the city of Lynchburg and the state of Virginia.
