Origin of the name Baylor Bears
The Baylor Bears' name originated in 1914 when the school held a contest to determine a new mascot. The bear won the contest, and the first live bear mascot, a black bear named Ted, arrived on campus in 1917.
Ted was a popular mascot, and he even had his own song, "The Baylor Bear." However, Ted died in 1922, and the school went without a live mascot for several years.
In 1934, Baylor acquired a new live bear mascot, a grizzly bear named Jubilee. Jubilee was even more popular than Ted, and he became a symbol of Baylor's spirit. Jubilee died in 1948, and the school has not had a live mascot since then.
Today, the Baylor Bears are represented by a costumed mascot named Bruiser. Bruiser is a popular figure at Baylor sporting events, and he helps to keep the Baylor spirit alive.
