Auburn has
a unique pregame ritual where they gather at Toomer's Corner, a historic site on campus, and toss rolls of toilet paper onto the trees. This tradition started in the 1950s and continues to this day.Auburn is the only team in college football history to have three Heisman Trophy winners play on the same team in the same backfield. Pat Sullivan won the award in 1971, Bo Jackson in 1985, and Cam Newton in 2010.
In 1957, Auburn's football team was the first in college football history to fly to a game. They chartered a flight to play the Miami Hurricanes in Florida. In the 1950s, flying was not as common as it is today, and most college football teams traveled to games by bus or train. Auburn's decision to fly to their game against Miami was seen as a bold move at the time and generated a lot of attention.
The flight was arranged by Auburn's athletic director, Jeff Beard, who was looking for a way to get his team to Florida quickly and comfortably. He worked with the Delta Air Lines to charter a DC-3 airplane, which could carry the team, coaches, and staff.
The flight took about four hours, and the team arrived in Miami the night before the game. The players were amazed by the experience of flying, as most of them had never been on a plane before. Some of the players even reported feeling sick during the flight due
to turbulence. Despite the new experience, Auburn played well and won the game against Miami 14-0. The victory helped solidify Auburn's reputation as a football powerhouse and demonstrated the potential benefits of air travel for sports teams.
Since then, flying to games has become much more common, and most major college football teams now travel by plane. But Auburn's decision to charter a flight in 1957 is still remembered as a significant moment in the history of college football.
Auburn's mascot, Aubie the Tiger, has won seven national championships in the Universal Cheerleading Association Mascot National Championship. Aubie has also won the Capital One National Mascot of the Year award nine times.
In 2005, Auburn's game against Georgia was delayed for 25 minutes because of a bizarre incident where a fan released a bald eagle during the national anthem. The eagle flew around the stadium and then landed on the goalpost, causing the delay.
